Today the film productions are aimed at experienced graphic designers, to create the movie poster able in summarizing the movie in one image, between 40′s and 70′s instead relied on real artists to paint them.

Basically a film posters and the lobby cards (created just for posting in the theatres) were real works of art to advertise a movie.

For example, for the film Bicycle Thieves the creation of posters and lobby cards was entrusted to the painter Ercole Brini, who painted the sketches in watercolor and gouache, in a style that could be called “neo-realist” very suitable to the spirit of the film.
