The great movie lesson of “Neorealism. We were not just… bicycles thieves” landed at Lido of Venice, in the point of view of some of the festival goers, with a perfect timing. Here the reason why.
The anthology of the greatest post-war Italian film, politely narrated by Carlo Lizzani, the docu-film by Gianni Bozzacchi deeply moved all the film buffs and fans interviewed, despite different ages and backgrounds.
Outside the movie theater the audience, told his emotional shock for the resurfacing from the memory of the dramatic themes of Neorealism and, on the other side, the pleasant rediscovery of famous actors of that period: Anna Magnani, Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica and of course Carlo Lizzani, just to name a few.
For the audience of Venice Film Festival the the documentary does not just summarize and synthesize a time of recent history, but shows, especially to the new generations, how to react to this state of general crisis that we are all living nowatime, with a new and (why not?) greater artistic and cultural revolution.
Just a look back, then, and an outstretched hand toward to the future. The symbol of this passing of the baton between the cinema of that time and the contemporary cinema was for sure the red carpet, where Enzo Staiola, the child star of The Bicycle Thieves and the daughter of Gianni Bozzacchi, Rhea, recently graduated in Film-making at the Columbia University, marched shoulder to shoulder.
These are the stories and feelings collected right after the first screening of the documentary, on September the 1st, 2013, in the Great Hall.
